The Darkest Rap Song of All Time
I know, this post has a total linkbait title– there are hundreds of rap songs that could be crowned the darkest, the baddest, or the most moving. Shootouts with the federales, the bustin’ of slugs upon enemies, and the curse of the crack-pipe are common enough motifs, rich fodder for countless ghetto ballads.
But one song sticks in my mind more than others: “Dance With the Devil” by Immortal Technique.
The Peruvian born, Harlem raised artist solidified his reputation engaging in fiery battle raps. He eventually released Revolutionary Vol. I, the excellent Revolutionary Vol II, and The 3rd World as well as a grab-bag of freestyle raps, mixes and odds & ends that can be found strewn across the hip hop underground.
Immortal Technique’s lyrics are at once insightful and incendiary, and packed with leftist outrage and
astonishing metaphors. For example, in one lyric he refers to a subway full of workers as a “multicultural slave ship”, and in another, brands Condaleeza Rice a “new age Sally Hemmings”.
The rapper is currently in an interesting place, too underground to fully break into the mainstream, yet well known enough to have gathered a large following. This may actually be the best place for him to be, for signing onto a major label would likely force him to abandon his more extreme lyrics–something he says he would never do.
Anyways…”Dance With the Devil” from Technique’s first album gets my vote. Despite its raw production, the song works so well because it tells a conventional, almost stereotypical ghetto story and then suddenly punctuates it with a horrifying twist. The flow which facilitates the final revelation is relentless, gripping and not soon forgotten:

Here’s my opinion.
Technique shouldn’t be compared to people like 50 cent, or any commercial rappers really. There’s an intellectual foundation in Techniques lyrics that 50 cent doesn’t have, and most people won’t grasp unless it’s explained to them. The content of a 50 cent track never steps outside the dimensions of what sells records. Technique goes wherever he wants, not just hotel rooms full of bitches, surviving a ridiculous number of gunshots, and non stop self promotion. So that being said, people like 50 cent will always be in the spotlight, because most of the consumer population is too simple minded to notice how empty all his shit really is.
I’ve got respect for Technique, he’s a beast with lyrics, and he deserves way more credit than he receives, but he’s not a sell-out, so his credit will never stretch beyond a small percentage of the rap fans in North America.
I’ve got another person to add to your lists of Dark Rappers and Darkest Tracks.

One of the sickest, rawest, craziest, most creative, and original mc’s ever. His lyrics are so incredibly clever, and at the same time, unbelievably harsh. It’s a beautiful thing in my opinion.
If you haven’t studied his music in detail, then you don’t know what you’re missing. On a final note: If you don’t accept the fact that he’s in the top ten greatest of all time list, then in all honesty you don’t really understand, or appreciate real rap. Just my opinion, as well as an absolute fact…
