Let’s be honest. The average worker isn’t working every minute he’s on the job. He does take legitimate breaks, but he also stares off into space, shuffles papers around to appear productive, and has an occasional rubber band shootout with a rival department.

But in any case, a company usually pays a worker a fixed salary or hourly wage for the time his body is in the building–a fact which leads to the following awe-inspiring revelation: You can get paid to poop at work!

Well not to poop, but at least while you’re pooping.

This is nothing short of the American Dream.

I ran across this concept in an article which documented one worker’s valiant attempt to “poo against the machine”. By carefully regulating diet and harnessing the power of the human will she managed to make dropping a loaf between 9 and 5 a regular and a most welcome occurrence.

I was really surprised that a website, http://www.workpoop.com exists to aid employees in their endeavors. The site showcases a “poop counter” and “poop pay calculator” which perform their diabolical calculus and demonstrate the undeniable profitability of moving the mail.

Workpoop has other goofy content including a glossary, t-shirts, and amazingly enough: WoW- The women of workpoop.

So what are you waiting for! Coax and cajole your bowels into working for you and take charge of your own destiny! While safely ensconced in the stall, you can become your own CEO, lay out your roadmap to success, and poop all the way to the bank.

We’re all used to the stories about Jesus appearing in tortillas and the like. I recently heard one about Jesus appearing as a cheeto! However flavorful the crispy savior may have been, most people don’t take this type of “miracle” that seriously. On the other hand, there are surely a few that would have lined up to receive blessings from almighty “Cheesus”.

The following illusion is pretty cool, though it has a less than divine explanation. After staring at the center dots onscreen for around a minute, the negative image is ‘burned’ into the eyes, resulting in a temporary afterimage. Its a creepy effect to be sure, but may come in handy for those too impatient for the second coming!

I am addicted to ted.com, a site which has to be one of the most valuable on the Internet. The Technology Entertainment and Design (TED) Conferences gather together the brightest and most fascinating minds in one place, resulting in an outpouring of thought provoking lectures.

Jonathan Harris, a luminary in his field, delivers one such talk and speaks on how he combines art and computer science to understand the human story.

His first creation entitled We Feel Fine, is a program which scans blogposts for the phrases “I am feeling” or “I feel” and then takes these sentences, and assigns them a color based on the phrase’s emotion. This creates a larger snapshot of the internet’s mood which can be explored in greater detail.

A second project consists of numerous photographs of an arctic whale hunt. These can be filtered by character, times, excitement levels and other criteria to construct a sub-story taken from the main narrative.

For the third project, Harris travels to Bhutan, interviews a swath of natives and attempts to portray their happiness visually.

An awesome talk and one that shows shows that the evoluton of digital storytelling is in good hands…

There are 6 billion+ people on the planet and we’d like to tell ourselves that in an ocean of humanity we each have individual styles, tastes and personalities.

Nope.

Psychologists have identified broad personality types that almost everyone fits into. Novelists and mythologists recognize archetypes that are common to almost all cultures. Fashion, political leanings, and countless other facets of life can be reduced in part to a herd instinct that makes you gravitate toward or repel away from what you think you are –which for most humans is determined by by genetics and other people’s thoughts.

Exactitudes (Exact + Attitudes) has explored these ideas by documenting various dress codes and how they relate to group identity. Visionaries Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek have created a series of images which show people similarly dressed and striking the same poses. The stunning effect causes the viewer to re-evaluate how much he classifies a person based on an individual vs. group identity.

I know I’ve seen this tattooed fellow to the left lounging around in Pacific Beach. And I think we’ve all seen this busy executive (below) striding through the airport.

And more importantly, I know I’ll see him again even if its not him.

Truly, I am what I think you think I am….

Check out the site for more details: Exactitudes

This one has been circulating in chain letters for awhile, but I felt I had to revive it…

Icaro Doria, a Brazillian artist, created a “Meet the World” campaign which takes the flags of several nations and then uses their colors to illustrate sobering statistics. Just as a picture can be exponentially more valuable in conveying emotion than words, a representational chart or image can clearly surpass cold numbers in revealing the bigger picture:

China

European Union

In one of the all-time classic Simpson’s episodes, Homer, in an attempt to hide from his hirsute sisters-in-law, stumbles through a portal and into the third dimension….holy macaroni!

Only when the scene cuts back to the family’s 2D living room does it hit us how much an extra dimension changed how Homer saw his new and unfamiliar world.

Imagining past the 4th is hard enough for most people, but how about a 10th? Rob Bryanton’s book “Imagining the Tenth Dimension: A New Way of Thinking About Time and Space” attempts to do just that. According to superstring theory, what we think of as reality is actually made up of one dimensional strings vibrating in the 10th dimension. WTF?

Bryanton’s book has come under fire for being an astrophysics for dummies kind of read, and inferior to the works of others, such as Brian Greene. But, if you feel like your brain needs a workout, reach for your reefer and watch away!
